Taipei Jedi Knights Takes Singapore Open 2001 |
|
July 15-16, 2001, Singapore Peggy in a bind Imagine twelve teams worth of Ultimate players carousing through an island with a towering, glowing sculpture of a lion, a musical fountain, and a monorail, and you'll know why we felt like the last stop on the singing tour of a Small World on Crack. Pickup points with a couple Irish blokes and endzone-airplane man only confirmed that we had truly left the spinning teacups ride to enter the full-fledged world of Angmo Freakshow.
With crusty veterans and starry-eyed newbies, we looked more like Obi-wan Kenobi and His Band of Misfit Wookies than a clan of Jedi Knights. But, the renegade spirit of this rebel faction coursed with such intensity and fire that even George Lucas would have been proud. Michael to Messi Day One of pool play left the Jedi Knights with a record of 4-1, losing only one game against Singapore Freakshow... But the real competition stayed within the team as Josh's claim to the title Most Bitter Man Alive was grievously endangered by Erich "bitch" Altoray (pickup from Shanghai)Day Two, the Jedi Knights stepped up to the calling to crush the Dark Side. Finals versus Freakshow proved to be the best romp in the funhouse yet. Fueled by beautiful O and sheer desire, the game was kept hot by amazing defensive plays, in particular blocks by Brian "I got three feet on Steinar" Sheehan, Chris "white men can jump" Brooks, and Bennet "Asian guys can too" Sy.
The Taipei Jedi Knights Mikey, pumping everyone up with "more, more more," defied age, physical condition, and forces of nature to continually stun the crowd with layout upon gorgeous layout. Yelling "Josh- I don't need you tomorrow! I need you now!!!" Mikey bore an uncanny resemblance to Yoda as our spiritual guide to victory. With a final score of 11-3, the Jedi Knights made it clear that the force is indeed strong in this one. |
