Bali 2002
Bali 2002 Retrospective
by Jason "ex-MVPig now Towel Boy" Slimon

Here's a rundown of the games we played. The games were played to 11 points, but with a 45 minute time limit on the first day, we didn't reach 11 until the second day when the time limit was extended to one hour.

Day 1

1. Renegade Province vs. Sing. B (8-0)
Hmm…. What can be said? We outscored Sing. B 19-0 over two games. Sing. B did beat Indo B. on the second day to stave off elimination (which we did in the quarterfinals). I think our D was pretty good this game, but the split stack looked kind of ragged… as might be expected with the (great) new additions to the team - Fi, Brooksy, and Bailey - and our own lack of split-stack play in an intensive tournament environment.

2. Renegade Province vs. Indo B (9-1)
I don't remember too much about this game except that Indo scored first (on me!), and didn't even come close to scoring again. I think the split stack showed improvement….

3. Renegade Province vs. Les Invalides (France) (9-2)
The French offense looked really nice - good flow and patience, leading to some really long points. They just seemed to give out near the end of quite a few points…. Maybe it was a conditioning thing, a jet-lag thing or an age thing - they were definitely older on average than any other team. They definitely deserved the spirit award (or whatever they called it) because of their kind words in defeat, their Eiffel Tower spirit gifts, and their rowdiness during the final. I just remember looking up in the second half, seeing the score as 6-1, and thinking, "That can't be right… I'm so exhausted!"

4. Renegade Province vs. Hong Kong (9-3)
I don't know about anybody else, but I never really recovered from the game against Les Invaldes. I just remember covering Kelly at the end when they put all their women in - and scored on us to end the game!

Day 2

1. Quarterfinals - Renegade Province vs. Sing. B (11-0)

See comments on previous page.

2. Semifinals - Renegade Province vs. Les Invalides (France) (10-1)
I think we really kicked some ass in this game - we finally brought our "A" games. Of course, Les Invaldes was coming off a tough victory over the All-Stars, so they were probably a little more worn out than we were at that point.

3. Finals - Renegade Province vs. Sing. A (12-15)
Hmm…. I'm not sure, but maybe outscoring our opponents 56-7 (somebody check my math on that) wasn't such a good thing. Sing A opened up a quick 3-0 lead, prompting Josh to call a timeout. We pulled things together and actually went up 6-4. At 11-9, I thought we had it. That was the last point I played - I just had nothing left in the tanks and would have been a big liability out there. I must admit that was one of the most frustrating sports experiences of my life - I hate feeling like I'm letting other people down…. OK, enough about me. As Brooksy said in his "Retrospective" comments, our women were HUGE in this game! I can't emphasize that enough. Of course, Peggy took home the "Female MVP" award, and I think Steffi should have at least SHARED the "Female D" award, and for more than just that incredible grab off Nami. Anyway, I was supremely depressed after the game (locking Francisco and myself out of our room afterward was just adding insult to injury), but that party revived me. My towel antics have prompted Mikey naming me "post-tourney party coordinator"…. Any objections?! I have to say, hanging with the Taipei crowd was a hell of a lot of fun… I think I'm hooked (even though I probably won't be making it to Shanghai - sorry Tun, Peggy, Brooksy, and all).
